The EU AI Act is the European Union's comprehensive AI regulation, the first binding, economy-wide AI law of its kind. It classifies AI systems by risk level, from banned practices to high-risk systems (such as those used in hiring, credit, or critical infrastructure) down to limited- and minimal-risk tools, and layers on separate obligations for general-purpose AI (GPAI) models. It entered into force on 1 August 2024 and its obligations phase in over 2025-2027: prohibited practices and AI-literacy duties applied from 2 February 2025, obligations for general-purpose AI models from 2 August 2025, and the bulk of the high-risk-system requirements from 2 August 2026 (with embedded high-risk products following in 2027).
