Two tracks that rarely share a candidate pool
AI policy is outward-facing. Where governance writes the rules a company applies to itself, policy work engages the rules everyone else is writing: draft legislation, standards bodies, regulator consultations, and the public argument about what AI should be allowed to do. The output is analysis, written positions, testimony, and relationships, not internal process.
The field has two tracks that look similar on paper and rarely share a candidate pool. Policy research sits at think tanks, academic centers, and research nonprofits, and rewards published work, technical literacy, and the ability to develop an original position. Government affairs sits inside companies, and rewards legislative process knowledge, relationships with officials and their staff, and the discipline of representing an employer's position rather than your own. Moving between the two is possible, but it is a genuine career change.
This is the most location-bound function in AI hiring. Regulatory work happens where regulators are, so postings concentrate in Brussels, Washington DC, and London, with smaller clusters near other capitals and standards bodies. Remote listings exist but are less common than in technical AI roles, and even remote postings often carry an expectation of regular travel to the relevant capital.
