About the role 

As an AI/ML Engineer at Consultant level, you will contribute to the design, development and deployment of advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning models that address complex business problems. 

You will guide important aspects of the model lifecycle, including data acquisition, preprocessing, feature engineering, training, optimisation and model benchmarking. You will also collaborate with scale teams on deployment, production monitoring and lifecycle management. 

Working across disciplines, you will partner with designers, engineers, product managers and business stakeholders to translate requirements into robust, scalable and efficient AI solutions that deliver tangible value. 

You will stay current with developments in AI research and technology, applying relevant advances to rapid prototypes, products and services. You will also mentor and coach junior engineers, promote technical excellence, and champion responsible AI, data privacy and secure engineering practices. 

Education 

Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence or a related field.  

Core experience and skills

• Substantial professional experience designing and implementing analytics or AI systems for R&D, product or commercial applications. Approximately five years of relevant professional experience is desirable, with capability and delivery evidence taking priority.

• Deep hands-on experience applying AI, data science, machine learning, deep learning and data-modelling techniques to real-world problems.

• Strong experience with large language models and natural language processing technologies.

• Advanced programming proficiency in Python.

• Proficiency in prompt and context engineering.

• Experience benchmarking new AI models and open-source frameworks.

• Ability to navigate uncertainty and ambiguity with a proactive, solutions-focused mindset.

• Exposure to cloud-native AI platforms such as Azure Machine Learning, AWS SageMaker or Google Vertex AI. Hands-on experience operationalising models at scale is strongly preferred.

• Experience in collaborative, multidisciplinary and agile teams with distributed stakeholders.

• Strong communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical business stakeholders.

• Experience mentoring, coaching or leading junior team members.

Additional experience that would strengthen a candidate

• Experience with relational, document and knowledge-graph data stores, plus vector databases for retrieval-augmented generation solutions; SQLAlchemy is a plus.

• Knowledge of data-security and data-privacy principles and regulations.

• Familiarity with Databricks, Apache Beam or cloud-native data pipelines; Hadoop or Spark is a nice-to-have.

• Understanding of Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD and MLOps tools such as MLflow or Kubeflow.

• Experience building and integrating secure RESTful APIs, for example with FastAPI.

• Experience with Git, branching strategies, pull requests, code reviews and unit testing.

• Ability to rapidly prototype AI solutions using frameworks, APIs and cloud services for validation.

• Experience working in a large, matrixed organisation.

• A structured approach to AI-assisted software development using GitHub Copilot or similar tools.
